The Highway 8 Emergency Repairs Project was initiated following the November 2021 flood events, which damaged 24 sites between Spences Bridge and Merritt. Phase 2 includes permanent repairs, environmental restoration, and resurfacing of remaining highway sections to improve long-term performance.
The work focuses on rebuilding a safer and more resilient corridor, including realigned highway sections, enhanced slope stabilization with riprap, deeper bridge foundations, upgraded culvert systems, and modern road construction features such as stronger road bases, wider shoulders, and concrete barriers.
Site 10 - Earthworks & Grading
Constructed temporary access pads to support piling and crane operations, installed new riprap revetments, and completed drainage works including new culverts and snake crossings along the highway. The work also included removal of existing road aggregate, reconstruction of the road structure, and completion of slope embankment works.
Sites 11 & 13 - Environmental Offsetting
Completed environmental offsetting works, including construction of new river channels to create spawning habitat, installation of woody habitat features, and planting works to restore vegetation in areas impacted by previous flood events
Site 11 - KM 9 to KM 12 (East of Spences Bridge Washouts)
Reconstructed damaged roadway sections through removal of existing high-fines surfacing aggregate and installation of new road structure and pavement. Large boulders and riprap revetments were installed to improve resilience against future high-water events.
Sites 20 & 21 - Three Mile Bridge No. 6373 & Rattlesnake Bridge No. 677 Reinstatement
Completed roadway reinstatement through removal of existing high-fines materials and reconstruction of the road structure and pavement. The work also included in-stream excavation, installation of new riprap revetments, and placement of woody debris structures to improve bridge abutment protection and provide aquatic habitat.
Site 22 - Curnow Bridge No. 892 Reinstatement
Completed bridge reinstatement works including steel pipe piling, reinforced concrete abutments, bearing installation, riprap placement, and full reconstruction of the road base, surfacing, and associated infrastructure.
